Napier Backroadz Truck Tent For Outdoor Camping

The Napier Backroadz Truck Tent is a crowd-pleaser. It’s easy enough for even the most novice camper to set up and sturdy enough to provide a pleasant shelter through almost any night, almost anywhere. Everything about the tent’s design feels thoughtful from the color-coded poles and matching pockets to the gear loft and rear access panel between the tent and truck. A full floor separates you from the bare metal of your truck bed, and the addition of an awning means you have a covered space to cook, place a camp chair, or just take off your shoes and backpack before climbing in.

Set-up isn’t difficult, but it can require a lot of adjusting to get the fit just right. The Sportz tent is held in place by three nylon straps on either side of the bed, plus three more that wrap around the tailgate. When I set it up on my friend’s shiny, garage-kept truck, I was a bit anxious about the braided nylon straps sliding across the paint. I didn’t actually spot any scratches, but Napier does produce compatible strap protectors, if it’s something you’re worried about. Check also Coleman Dome Tent for outdoor camping.

Overall, the tent is comfortable, with lots of room to stretch out (though I’m barely 5-feet, 2-inches). Big mesh windows make it comfortable inside even on warmer days, and while I wouldn’t choose it for frigid mid-winter camping, it certainly holds up in a decent rain and chilly nights.

FAQ:

Question: Will it work with a Chevy avalanche?
Answer: No Napier makes an Avalanche specific truck tent. Got one and it works great.

Question: can you use this if you have a hard 5 segment folding toneau cover installed?
Answer: Seems to me it would get in the way. This tent goes from corner to corner, tight fit. Any toolbox or anything else would hinder it fitting correctly. If you can’t remove it , I’m not seeing it work. If the 5 segments slide out and can be removed, it would be fine.

Question: Will this work on my Silverado with head rack?
Answer: I think it would work but it might be difficult to set up depending on how the head rack is mounted

Question: Will this fit a 2020 tacoma trd sport with a bakflip tonneau on it?
Answer: I wouldn’t do it. I got this same tent and I have the same Tacoma build and a bakflip tonneau cover. The issue is with the Napier is it has a floor in it. With the tonneau cover the floor isn’t able to wrap around the cover when it folded back. I returned the tent. I got a Rightline tent instead and it works great. The Rightline has no floor in it so you don’t have to make it stretch over the tonneau cover. I don’t think you necessarily need to get the Rightline brand. Just make sure it’s a floorless tent. The Napier was great but does not work with the Bakflip

Question: Will this fit in a Rivian R1T?
Answer: I would measure the inside of your truck bed and see if they offer that size. Most truck beds have a standard size.

Question: How much wind can it handle?
Answer: I’ve use tent twice in moderate wind 15mph and tent was solid. I’m not sure what wind velocity your concerned about. Based of shape and install I would say could handle easily 25 mph winds. Other suggestions We ended up using blow up mattress inside gent. Worked out great. Because being off ground I did not properly prepare for how cold truck bed got from airspace of being off ground.

Question: I have a 2021 silverado crew cab. inside bed measures 5’8”. tailgate to behind the cab measures 6’4”. so i am assuming i get the tent that is 5’8”?
Answer: That’s mor than enough room.

Question: Do any of the sizes fit with a Honda Ridgeline?
Answer: The tent might be a little big. Ridgeline has a 5.3′ bed. 5.5′ is the small perimeter for the backroadz but the CAMO tent is made for a 5′ box so that may work. Best bet is to measure your bed and compare.
